GoldTop Merino Wool Lined Gauntlet

I bought these gloves back in March 2024. What appealed to me was the classic look; they look like something from a bygone era, when bikes were not as refined as today, where practical protection from the elements stood for more than fancy materials - just leather and wool, natural fibres used for centuries!

Certified to CE Certified Level 1 to EN13594:2015, the leather outer is 1.2mm aniline cowhide leather, a premium, highly natural leather that is dyed with soluble dyes but lacks any artificial pigmented topcoat or protective paint. It preserves the cowhide's soft texture and natural grain, allowing blemishes like scars and wrinkles to remain visible. Both front and back are made from a single hide, no joining to split over time.

Lined with 100% Merino Wool, they have a traditional wrist strap with press stud fastening just above the palm. All this is sewn together using 5 strand cotton thread.

I first thought I would only be using them as winter gloves. The merino wool would keep me warm on cold rides; I never imagined I would use them year-round.

The beauty of the merino wool is its ability to take moisture from my hands, keeping them feeling dry and comfortable all day. It’s that ability that makes them just as good on hot summer rides. The sweat from my hands is taken away.

Leather, being natural, has pores, these let the sweat taken away from my hands pass through and evaporate. Brilliant, no breathable membranes to split! just nature working for me.

 

The long gauntlet design pulls over my jacket stopping draughts. I thought rain might be a problem running down my arm into the glove, it is, but not as much as I thought.

Each finger is made as a box gusset, keeping the finger shape and not putting strain on the seams.

You do need to look after them. When they get wet, I put them over the bike mirrors letting air circulate around and through them to let them dry naturally.

I invested in some water-repellent balm at the time I bought them. Using the included pad, I give them a new coating about once a month. It’s kept them water repellent, flexible and looking good well after two years of using them on every ride.

As the gloves age, they develop a lovely patina and get even softer, every mark, every blemish reminds me of rides enjoyed.
